Kaleidoscopes

Reflection Questions:

Going into this project, I thought it would be really easy, but once I started I realized it was harder than I thought. The hardest part for me was coming up with the different designs for the three kaleidoscopes. The first one I did very few layers and I didn't really play with the colors at all because I wasn't exactly sure what to do. The second one had a lot of the same layer and that's when I tried to play with the colors a little more. That one isn't my favorite, but I like how I was able to duplicate the same layer to make it look similar to a flower. The last kaleidoscope I did ended up being my favorite. I didn't do as many different colors, but I kept layering and adjusting the color of every other layer and I liked how the middle ended up having some purple to stand out, and how the sun was really brightened to make the picture pop.

When making each kaleidoscope I mostly used the same tools for each one. Every time I would use the ruler, the polygonal lasso tool, the rectangular marquee tool, and the quick selection tool. The quick selection tool was the one I used the most because it allowed me to cut out certain pieces of the picture to try and make different patterns. When playing with the colors, I first used invert, then just the color balance, and then I just adjusted the levels for the last one to try and really bring out the sun.

From 1-10, I might give myself a 7 or an 8 because even though I tried to do some experimenting with the tools and patterns and colors, I probably could've tried harder to make them look a little more distorted. If I could do it again, that's what I would do. I would take a little more time to actually take a risk and experiment with it. I also might choose a completely different picture that I could see myself getting more details out of. Overall, though, I do like how my kaleidoscopes ended up coming out. Especially the last one.

Comments

  1. In all honesty, these kaleidoscopes came out great! I think you had a great picture to begin with, and that there was a lot to work with. The light flare in the middle of the picture quite literally shines through in the kaleidoscopes, which adds a very unique element to your kaleidoscopes that I don’t think anyone else had. Therefore I think that your second kaleidoscope is a little weaker than the others because it lacks this element. I think that with the floral pattern you went for in your second kaleidoscope the light would have made it much more interesting visually.
In contrast I believe that your first kaleidoscope would have benefited if more dark colors were added. The first kaleidoscope has a lot of bright white/blue area when compared to your other kaleidoscopes, and in some areas looks a little cloudy. This makes it a little strange when the layer(s) in the center are so clear and rigid.
However I agree that your third Kaleidoscope is your strongest piece. I feel that it creates a nice balance between darks and lights. It really looks like a kaleidoscope and uses very clean symmetry. Visually it is the most appealing of the three, and stands out the most. It’s almost as if you took all the good things about the first kaleidoscope and mixed it with all the good things from the second Kaleidoscope.
